Russian Jack Park, in Anchorage, Alaska, has many trails used year 'round for hiking, biking, and skiing. You'll also find the municipal greenhouses there, where the multitude of flowers used in downtown displays are grown. The greenhouses are not open to the public. One smaller area that welcomes visitors, has a pleasant tropical garden with a waterfall, fish pond, and aviary. After hiking some of the trails on March 12, 2005, battling wind, rain, and puddles on ice, I spent a bit of time enjoying the flowers in the tropical gardens. It was a delightful contrast. Daffodils and crocus plants have not yet appeared in our outdoor gardens, but were plentiful in the this warm, humid setting.
